Celebrating Norah's First Birthday

Bart and Stefani have been friends of ours for some time now.  They recently asked me to document a big day....the first birthday.  Congrats to Norah, a beautiful baby girl who is growing fast.

A to the 4th Power - This is my thing!

AAAA

A LIFESTYLE SHOOT WITH THE MEGHANI FAMILY.

TRUTH BE TOLD, I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A PERSON OF NON CONVENTION.  I TEND TO REBEL AGAINST THE IDEOLOGY THAT YOU SHOULD DO WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING BECAUSE IT'S WHAT EVERYONE IS DOING.  THIS BRINGS ME TO MY PHOTOGRAPHIC STYLE (IF THERE IS EVEN SUCH A THING).  WHILE I BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THAT "MANTLE" PHOTO AND DON'T ACT LIKE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.......THE PHOTO WHERE EVERYONE IS IN A FIELD WITH MATCHING WHITE SHIRTS, A NICE SOFT SUNSET, IN A GOLDEN FIELD OF HEATHER GRASS AND THE PERFECT, SYNCHRONIZED SMILE.    THERE IS A LEVEL OF NECESSITY TO TAKE A TIMELESS IMAGE, A TIMELESS PORTRAIT.  WITHOUT A DOUBT, FAMILIES SHOULD HAVE THOSE TYPES OF PHOTOS BUT I FIND THEM UNINTERESTING.  THESE ARE THE TYPE OF PHOTOS THAT GET THE 'LIKE' BUTTON ON FACEBOOK.  THOSE ARE THE TYPE OF PHOTOS THAT BLOW UP ON PINTEREST.  IT'S NOT A BAD THING AT ALL, IT JUST ALL FEELS SO PROCESSED, SO TO SPEAK.

FOR ME, PHOTOGRAPHY HAS BEEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO CAPTURE AND PRESERVE MOMENTS.  I DON'T WALK AROUND IN MATCHING SHIRTS WITH MY FAMILY IN GOLDEN FIELDS OF HEATHER GRASS, SO I DON'T WANT MY PHOTOS TO REFLECT THAT.  MY PHOTOGRAPHIC PASSION STARTED WITH A MINOLTA KIT THAT MY UNCLE SOLD TO MY PARENTS YEARS AGO.  I NEVER REALLY TOOK ANY PHOTOS WITH THAT CAMERA OTHER THAN A COUPLE OF SNAPSHOTS BUT I WAS ALWAYS INTRIGUED.  BACK IN 2000 I FOUND A CANON ELPH FILM CAMERA AND THAT PRETTY MUCH LEAD ME TO WHERE I AM TODAY.  A CAMERA LOVING JUNKY.

THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO LEARN AS FAR AS BEING A "BETTER PHOTOGRAPHER" BUT THAT LEADS YOU TO THE QUESTION OF, "WHAT IS A BETTER PHOTOGRAPHER".  I SEE COUNTLESS ARTICLES COMMENTING ON LENS SHARPNESS, AUTOFOCUS SPEED, SPECS, ETC.  ASPIRING PROFESSIONALS SOMEHOW BELIEVE THAT THEY NEED A $3000 CAMERA TO BE A "PROFESSIONAL".  WE'VE ALL BEEN THERE AS PEOPLE WHO LOVE SHOOTING.  WE START WITH A CHEAP CAMERA THAT WE THINK IS EXPENSIVE AND CONSTANTLY UPGRADE UNTIL WE HIT A POINT WHERE WE HAVE "THE BEST" GEAR.  RARELY DO YOU SEE PEOPLE ASK FOR ADVICE AS TO WHAT EDUCATION I SHOULD GET TO BECOME A BETTER PHOTOGRAPHER.  IT'S SIMPLY, "IS THIS LENS, OR THAT LENS BETTER FOR THIS?"  SERIOUSLY, TO THOSE PEOPLE, GO OUT AND TAKE PICTURES AND QUIT READING REVIEWS.

FOR ME IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MOMENT NOT IF YOUR PHOTO IS CLINICALLY SHARP.  IF YOU'RE A COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHER THERE IS A NECESSITY TO BE CLINICAL.  DO YOU NEED EDGE TO EDGE SHARPNESS TO SHOOT AN AWESOME LANDSCAPE PHOTO, NO!   AS THIS THING GROWS FOR ME, THE ONLY THING THAT IS IMPORTANT IS IF I CAPTURED THE MOMENT?  THAT'S ALL THE MATTERS IN MY OPINION, IPHONE, FUJI, SONY, CANON, NIKON, WHATEVER,  IT DOESN'T MATTER.

ALL IN ALL, I LOVE THIS PHOTO SHOOT WITH AMEE, ANKUR, AAKASH AND AASHA (HENCE THE TITLE OF THE BLOG POST, A TO THE 4TH!)  I APPRECIATE THEM ALLOWING ME TO TRACK A PORTION OF THEIR DAY AND FROM THE PHOTOS YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH LOVE THAT THEY SHARE FOR EACH OTHER.

THIS IS MY THING. THIS IS WHY I TAKE PHOTOS.  ENJOY.

East Lansing - September 2014 - Ryan and Alexia

HOME SWEET HOME

While Saginaw, MI is my home town, I also consider East Lansing to be my second home, so to speak.  I can't express the importance of some of the relationships that I have maintained and procured from my time there.  For me, it truly is a  special place and it was fantastic to spend a weekend back in town to celebrate Alexia and Ryan's wedding.  Alexia is someone that has carried over from my home to my second home as we both went to high school and college together.  Ryan, her husband, is a great dude and together they make a great pair.  I'll post a few pictures from the wedding ceremony at some point but for now these photos document the weekend as a whole.

Beautiful wedding, awesome people, great family and a fantastic time.

Cherish your friends, family and anything that is important to you.  Your life is a collection of experiences that lead, guide, and shape you.  Without those experiences you would not be who you are today.  Simple solution if you aren't happy with your path, change your experiences and find a balance between living for yourself and living for others.  Weekends like this remind me of that balance and I am thankful to have experienced what I have so far in this life.  Cheers.

Deep Ellum Brewing Company Tap Room

In the past few months, I promised myself to start photographing places that I have had good experiences at whether it be local or not so local.  Call it an editorial series, call it what you want, but the purpose is simply to show off some places that are doing it right. The series started with a trip to Vagabond in Lower Greenville, in Dallas.  You can check out that editorial HERE (http://www.jesseford.net/blog/vagabond)

This post is featuring the Deep Ellum Brewery.  DEBC the recently opened a taproom/bar so that you can experience their great brews on days other than the designated tour days.  That being said, It's interesting to watch the Dallas beer scene evolve and since going to DEBC on one of their opening weekends, it's always a positive thing to see it turn into what it has become.  DEBC still runs their Saturday tours but with the addition of the Taproom, you can grab a delicious glass of DEBC beer any day of the week.

Here's to the growth of the local breweries here in Dallas and if you haven't checked out DEBC's new Taproom, here are a few images from.  For more information about DEBC - Check out their website here...  Cheers!

Streets of Baltimore - College Park - MSU VS Maryland

Something that I am vowing to do this year is to travel more and travel without necessarily a purpose.  I've become very fond of the quick weekend.  Hopefully I can expand on these types of trips to capture new places and faces.  Whether it's visiting friends or taking random journeys, I'm look forward to capturing fun times this year.....  Unfortunately, there is so much to see and such very little time.

As far pictures go, one strength I feel that I have as a photographer is telling a story visually and with that being said this is a visual documentation of our trip to the Greater Baltimore area, enjoy.....and I'm still pissed I didn't meet Omar!!
